SafeKodi

The first aggregator for (safe) Kodi addons

Last addon update (23 March): SafeKodi v1.0.3 now supports alerting when database is updated

What is SafeKodi?

SafeKodi is a Kodi addon which aims at informing Kodi users about potentially malicious addons installed on their devices. For example, SafeKodi is able to identify addons which might install malware or inject unwanted advertisement. SafeKodi further provides the users with the quick option to disable addons marked as unsafe.

SafeKodi's database is continuously updated with de-Kodi [code][paper][video], a Kodi crawler which is capable of discovering and testing large cross-sections of Kodi’s decentralized ecosystem at tunable levels of depth and breadth. With this tool, we discovered and tested over 9,000 distinct Kodi addons. More information on the tool we used can be found in the paper.

SafeKodi keeps constantly exploring more addons. If an add-on is marked as "unknown" by SafeKodi, our backend server will attempt to automatically locate such addon on the Web and test it on demand.

Addons information (name and version) are sent to our backend at safekodi.com anonymously, i.e., no user information is collected. Our code and database are open source and we welcome both investigation and bug reporting.

Method

We install and run the add-on one by one in a sandbox and we audit if there is any network traffic between the add-on and the current known URLs and IPs that contain tacking, ads, threats, and malware.

The filters we used are based on EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Google Safe Browsing, and FireHOL IP Lists.
